IV Pump Buying Considerations and Leading Brands

What drives IV pump buying decisions for other organizations and how they decide when to replace a pump rather than repair.

A recent report from KLAS titled Smart Pumps 2022: Where Are Organizations Investing for the Future? examined smart pump purchasing decisions.

To find out what drives IV pump purchasing decisions in healthcare organizations, authors used validated purchases from vendors including ICU Medical, Baxter, B. Braun, BD, and Smiths Medical (now also part of ICU Medical).

Report authors obtained data relating to a number of factors in the purchase decision, including:

  • Culture
  • Loyalty
  • Operations
  • Product
  • Relationship
  • Value

So what’s most important to other organizations renewing their IV pumps?

Product familiarity is the most important factor for the large majority of organizations.

Operators are comfortable with the workflow they have created (and many have used for a large portion of their careers). They are not interested in shifting to a new IV pump with a learning curve and an increased potential for error, based on personal experience.

Nurses want to use the same pumps they have been using for as long as possible.

Other factors that impact product selection include:

  • Previous relationship
  • Price
  • Consolidation
  • Interoperability
  • No recalls

How do other organizations decide when to replace their IV pumps?

The most commonly cited reason for replacing a smart pump is if the product has become obsolete.

And when they do replace the IV pump they’re using, most organizations are likely to choose either:

Some other findings from the report include:

  • Six out of nine respondents were not satisfied with the price and difficulty of B. Braun pumps and intended to switch to another vendor.
  • Most smart pump vendors received an improved overall performance score in 2022 vs. 2021, except for B. Braun, which scored 1% lower in 2022.

Keep your operators happy. Keep their favorite pumps in circulation.

Your organization can keep those favorite Smiths Medical/Medfusion or Baxter IV pumps longer by working with us. We support your pumps long after the manufacturer has moved on.

TESTIMONIALS

"I also wanted to heap praise on your repair techs. It's nice to get repairs that stay repaired after 6 months. I have stuff that was repaired 3 years ago that has never given me problems again. Other places just seem to patch it together and then it breaks again as soon as the warranty is up. Between horses enjoying knocking over IV poles, and dogs who enjoy chewing on things, our equipment is sometimes in pretty bad shape. Your techs take the time to check and fix all of the parts that might be damaged from this type of treatment, and I and the animals here appreciate it."

"My technicians really like your fluid warmer and feel that it keeps the patients a few degrees warmer versus not using it. After we trialed it they were begging for more fluid warmers so it must work."
