The medical device maker, Smiths Medical announced that they have closed an agreement with the US Army to supply its Madigan Army Medical Center with its infusion pumps. The US Army is set to purchase the company’s CADD® Solis ambulatory infusion system, an advanced medication delivery system that administers pain relievers for post-surgery, trauma, cancer and labor and delivery.

At 17 weeks, Tammy Gonzales had a prenatal check-up and learned that her unborn baby had a tumor growing in its mouth. Using ultrasound, her gynecologist identified the bubble-like image in the monitor as a rare congenital tumor called oropharyngeal teratoma which could grow up to two pounds.

Gonzalez sought help from UM/Jackson fetal surgeon Ruben Quintero, who specializes in treating birth defects and high-risk conditions while the baby is still in the womb. Together with fellow fetal surgeon Dr. Eftichia Kontopoulous, Quintero performed “the first of its kind in the world” procedure to take out the tumor.

The surgeons used an ultrasound-guided endoscope and a laser to remove the tumor, clearing the baby’s mouth. The procedure was conducted at the Jackson Memorial Hospital.

On October 1, 2010, the baby was born normal and healthy, bearing no deformities.

Fetal monitoring equipment not only helped clinicians detect any abnormalities or any risk to the baby’s health but also guided them to perform this successful unique fetal surgery. To ensure efficient maternal and fetal care is delivered, only high quality fetal monitoring equipment should be used. AIV provides accessories for most leading fetal monitors.
