The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) proudly announced the application of a leading-edge interoperability technology between their infusion pump systems and electronic medical records (EMRs) software. This bidirectional integration process is aimed at upholding intravenous (IV) therapy safety, documentation precision, and clinical workflow optimization for improved overall patient care.

Connecting our infusion pumps to our EMR not only creates a safer environment for our patients, but it also provides a more efficient workflow for our clinicians. We are proud that University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is among the first in the nation to adopt this cutting-edge technology,” said UIHC chief medical informatics officer Dr. Douglas J. Van Daele.

The two-way communication between the EMRs and smart pumps works by automating traditional IV administration workflow, allowing for seamless patient data interoperability. The UI team executed this key patient safety initiative powered by new technologies from their EMR provider, which decreases the risk of IV medication errors that may occur from manual keypad entries.

The interoperability solution is also compatible for large volume IV pump systems and syringe-based infusion modules. This advanced capability allows for the syringe infusion device to streamline drug administration across a wide range of patients, including high-risk pediatric patients, newborns, and other critical care patients.

UIHC also shared their future plans to develop and apply innovative biomedical technologies in their practices that will be capable of real-time IV pump location-tracking solutions to help clinicians, biomedical engineers, and equipment managers optimize patient safety.

For EMR and IV pump system integrations to become successful, it is critical for clinicians to use only medical-grade, superior quality infusion systems. AIV is dedicated to providing a wide range of IV pump system accessories, power supply solutions, and replacement parts to compliment virtually any clinical facility requirement.
