Beth Kolko, an engineering professor at the University of Washington and founder of Shift Labs, recently developed the DripAssist infusion pump that tracks and streamlines traditional IV fluid administration. This breakthrough technology demonstrated a great potential for further medical devices and applications be introduced to developing countries.

Biomed Monthly – July 2014DripAssist is Shift Labs’ pioneering innovation, set for commercialization this summer, and is tailored to offer a high-precision solution in delivering and measuring the prescribed amount of IV fluids. This compact device also works in any size of drip chambers and reads IV fluid flow rate instantaneously. It is also integrally featured for ease of usability at a very low cost, allowing more and more clinicians and healthcare providers in developing countries an access to quality infusion pump equipment.

This clinical brainchild is motivated by Kolko’s personal advocacy to learn about third-world countries access to biomedical technology and how she can help improve the quality of life for people around the globe. “Over 80 percent of medical devices in developing countries are donated, but only a small fraction are ever used because of spotty electricity or staffing shortages. Shift Labs tailors its products to those conditions,” she added.

Clinical breakthroughs like the DripAssist offer today’s medical device industry a smarter way of monitoring IV fluids critical in delivering quality health care. AIV is a dedicated provider of IV pump parts, accessories, and repair services that meet the unique demands of any healthcare facilities for infusion system solutions.
