Leading global medical device manufacturer Smiths Medical received FDA 510(k) clearance to market its CADD®-Solis pain management system version 3.0 with Programmed Intermittent Bolus (PIB) and Patient Controlled Analgesics (PCA) delivery in the United States. The innovative infusion system will allow healthcare providers to maintain effective epidural analgesia during labor and delivery as well as with post-operative pain management.
Traditionally, pain relief via an epidural analgesia is delivered using a pump that provides manual bolus injections from a clinician, constant infusions, or patient-controlled intermittent doses of medication. However, these conventional pain infusion therapy techniques may be inconsistent and/or ineffective.
"The new CADD®-Solis system with PIB and PCA combines programmed intermittent boluses and patient-controlled doses in an integrated, innovative delivery system," said Tommy Johns, Vice President Global Product Management at Smiths Medical. “The PIB programming parameters and the delivery pressure provided by the CADD®-Solis system offer flexible drug delivery and reliable distribution of medication, which can help overcome some of the challenges associated with epidural analgesia."
The CADD®-Solis system meets industry standards for advanced error-reduction features in PCA pumps. This state-of-the-art pain management system has three main components. First is the CADD®-Solis Ambulatory Infusion Pump, a compact, versatile device allowing patient mobility and convenience. Second is the CADD™-Solis Medication Safety Software – Administrator, enabling pharmacists to enter and store custom therapy-based protocols, drug names, concentrations and dosing limits. Third are the CADD™ Medication Cassette Reservoirs and CADD® Administration Sets for CADD®-Solis pumps, promoting added medication security.
With the CADD®-Solis infusion system’s innovative ergonomic design and advanced technology, pain infusion therapy is safer, more efficient and convenient for both patients and clinicians.
Nurses, anesthesiologists, pharmacists and other key hospital personnel committed to delivering the highest level of patient care must use properly maintained and well-serviced infusion pump systems.
