The Physician-Patient Alliance for Health Safety (PPAHS) recently released the “New Expert Checklist for Facilitating Safety of Hospital-Based Intravenous Patient-Controlled Analgesia Pumps”. The list aims to guide clinicians and caregivers on “essential steps needed to be taken to initiate Patient-Controlled Analgesia pumps with a patient and to continue to assess that patient’s use of PCA”.

According to the organization, the checklist was developed by medical experts from various renowned institutions, including The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Harvard School of Public Health, and Harvard Medical School.

“Every patient in a hospital has a responsibility to work with their healthcare provider to ensure their own safety… that is why, with the support of noted experts, we have developed a checklist of safety procedures for healthcare providers and patients using IV PCAs. It is through the active collaboration of physicians, nurses and patients themselves that true patient safety be achieved,” PPAHS Founder and Executive Director Michael Wong said.

The PPHAS is an advocacy group that consists of clinicians, individuals and organizations who continuously aim to improve patient health and safety. Their new guidelines on using PCA pumps will help patients and clinicians alike to achieve safe and effective medication delivery. It is equally essential that healthcare facilities use properly-serviced PCA pumps to achieve this goal. AIV offers replacement parts and repair services for most leading PCA pumps and other infusion pump models.
