PharmGuard Interoperability Software Allows Bi-Directional Communication with EMR SystemsNovember 29, 2016
Smiths Medical released version 1.1 of its PharmGuard interoperability software that allows bi-directional integration with Integrating the Health Enterprise (IHE) compatible EMR systems.
While the previous PharmGuard interoperability software sends information from the infusion pump alarms to the hospital’s alarm management system to alert clinicians, the updated version is designed to allow a clinical order to be sent directly to the Medfusion 4000 pump. This allows nurses to stay in control of the infusion and able to validate the programmed information with less manual entry. It saves time for clinicians, increases documentation accuracy, and improves patient safety by reducing manual errors. Wireless communication of infusion data is sent directly into a patient’s record in the hospital’s EMR system.
IHE, an initiative to improve the way computer systems in healthcare share communication, supports smart pump programming, auto-documentation, and alarm communication. Systems like PharmGuard that are integrated with IHE communicate more effectively with one another, are easier to implement, and enable more effective use of information by care providers.
