Pfizer Inc. Weighs Sale of Hospira

May 04, 2016

Hospira Inc.,the world’s leading provider of injectable drugs and delivery devices, was acquired for $17 billion by Pfizer, Inc. in September 2015. Hospira Inc.’s integration into Pfizer Inc. strengthened the drug maker’s portfolio of well-known drugs, such as off-patent medicines with slow growth and strong cash flow.

MarketWatch forecasts report that the global infusion pump market is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8% within 2015 – 2020, reaching a market value of $10,209.4 million by 2020. Increased prevalence of chronic diseases, rise in geriatric population and the increased use of infusion products and reimbursement coverage were attributed to the market growth.

In 2014, North America was reported to have the biggest market share of infusion pumps and accessories. Developed countries were noted to have low CAGRs versus the Asia-Pacific market, which had a high rate of 7.6%. Rapid growth for this region was credited to the aging population factor and high prevalence rate of chronic diseases.
