New Study Makes Use of Implantable Chemotherapy PumpAugust 12, 2013

Doctors at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto have begun a study to test the effectiveness of a new implantable chemotherapy pump.The Small,disc-shaped Hepatic Artery Infusion Pump (HAIP) as it is called, is surgically implanted just below the skin and connected via catheter to the main artery of the liver, which is also where liver tumours derive most of their blood supply.
The pump works by sending cancer-killing drugs to the patient’s liver for two weeks whilst receiving standard chemotherapy. According to Dr Paul Karanicolas, a surgical oncologist, the pump is beneficial in such a way that it spares the rest of the body from the drugs’ toxic effects.
In the U.S., where the pumps were developed and have been in use for some time, studies have suggested that tumours shrink in 75 per cent of patients using it, allowing many to eventually have the tumours surgically removed. The studies have also shown that HAIP therapy can increase the patients’ survival longevity, as well as increase quality of life due to the reduced chemotherapy side effects.
