Nationally Acclaimed Health System Implements Alaris Smart Pump and EMR IntegrationMarch 30, 2017
One of the largest safety net hospitals in the country, Grady Health System, is Atlanta’s first hospital to incorporate the Alaris IV smart pump technology with its EPIC electronic medical record. This integration takes patient safety to a new level.
The smart pump-EMR interoperability rollout is the most recent step for Grady’s technology journey for improving medication administration. Linking the smart pump to the patient’s medical record ensures that clinicians are using the right drugs on the right patients with the correct dosage at the right time. This integration decreases the number of steps a nurse takes significantly which reduces the chance for mistakes and increases efficiency. Barcode technology is used to validate the infusion against the physician’s order and the pump is programmed to dispense the medication. Real-time data for the patient care team is sent back to the medical record as the patient received the infusion.
Smart-pump-EMR interoperability is recognized throughout health care as a best practice. Twenty-five percent of U.S. hospitals have achieved smart pump-EMR interoperability to date.
