Smiths Medical Searching for New CEO while Demerging from Smiths Group

Medical devices are among the most critical assets in a healthcare setting and are entering ORs, ERs, and ICUs rapidly. Medical devices are being used as an attack vector, but the healthcare industry has been slow to adopt new tools and technology required to protect the sensitive patient data and health records. High profile cyber-attacks like WannaCry and NotPetya are prime examples of the lack of security on medical devices.

On average, healthcare organizations have 10,000 medical devices in their facilities with no department accountable for device security and response planning. A study conducted by the Ponemon Institute, an independent research organization that conducts studies on data protection, revealed that 80 percent of device makers and healthcare delivery organizations rate the level of difficulty in securing medical devices as very high but only 15 percent are taking significant steps to prevent attacks. To take on the daunting task of accounting for and securing medical devices, there has been an emergence of companies that automate and manage the security of devices and many organizations have developed a new in-house role, the medical device security officer. These companies provide network administrators the ability to see all active medical devices in their organization and where they are located. The in-house medical device security officer aligns medical devices with organization policies and technical standards of the industry and keeps tabs on inventory.

Presentations at the AAMI Exchange will include risks, threats, and vulnerabilities of networked devices and effective methods for analyzing and protecting their organizations and patients.
