Medgenics / Baxter Biopump Ready for Clinical Trials

October 10, 2011

Medgenics Ltd. confirmed they are currently in talks with Baxter Healthcare Corporation to renew their agreement which expired last September 30, 2011. The said agreement was collaboration for the development of a Factor VIII Biopump for the treatment of hemophilia.

The technology uses the patient’s own tissue from the skin which will produce and deliver therapeutic proteins inside the body through a simple implant. It is also believed that the Biopump, when successfully developed, can treat other chronic diseases such as anemia and hepatitis C, besides hemophilia.

Baxter has not released any comments on the matter but Medgenics confidently reported that the Biopump is ready for clinical trials and is currently in discussion for the earlier company to extend their collaboration which was originally signed two years ago, now with a total investment of US$ 7million.
