Interoperable Smart Pumps to Drive Growth of Original Equipment Manufacturers

New research has predicted growth for various companies in the US infusion pump market between the years of 2013 and 2019. This growth was attributed to an increase in technology innovations, a high prevalence of chronic diseases, and an increased focus on patient safety. Legislation and government initiatives to improve overall healthcare were also said to be the two biggest factors to make an impact on the market.

Key findings of the study identified insulin pumps and disposable ambulatory pumps as the fastest growing segments. Meanwhile, segments such as volumetric pumps, syringe pumps, and enteral pumps are expected to experience modest growth due to the aging population which is causing a large, existing base of infusion pumps to be replaced.

An increase in the number of active vendors offering infusion pumps in the United States was also reported. However, no new products in the pipeline will reach the US infusion pump market within the next two years, said the study.

Carefusion Corporation, Hospira Inc., B. Braun Medical Inc., Baxter, and Fresenius Kabi AG were reported to contribute the highest proportions of revenue at a total of 76% of the market revenue.

Pain management pumps including electronic ambulatory pumps and high-end syringe pumps were also said to experience high growth during the forecast period. This is attributed to the incentives and penalties being enforced by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on several hospitals across the United States.
