Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota received the Way Paver Award for Institutional Achievement, recognizing the healthcare organization’s effort for implementing a developed interoperability system between infusion pumps and electronic medical records (EMR). Children’s was honored at the annual unSUMMIT conference held in Orlando, Florida.

The Way Paver Award is given to individuals and institutions for their effort to integrate barcode point of care (BPOC) technology in US hospitals. Children’s is the first pediatric care institution to implement the BPOC technology to its hospital system and clinics.

"Children are particularly vulnerable to medication errors because dosages must be carefully tailored by weight… [t]his new system adds an additional safety check to help us achieve that goal." said Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota Senior Director of Patient Safety Bobbie Carroll in a press release.

The hospital system uses Cerner’s CareAware Infusion Suite where a Carefusion Alaris infusion pump system is connected to the Cerner Millenium EHR. The medication system enables wireless medication programming to Alaris infusion pumps, reducing the risk of IV medication errors from manual infusion bedside programming.

The IV pump delivery is automatically programmed when the barcodes on the patients’ wristbands are scanned via Cerner’s Point of Care Medication Administration solution. Physicians administer infusion parameters to ensure that accurate medication management and delivery is carried out accordingly.  This system also allows bi-directional communication between the infusion pump and the EHR for infusion medications.

Smart infusion pumps, integrated with advanced EMR interoperability, provides healthcare institutions accurate infusion therapies and avoids medication delivery errors. To ensure that this infusion pump technology is utilized accordingly, healthcare providers should only use properly-serviced IV pumps. AIV offers parts and services to most leading infusion pumps including CareFusion Alaris models.
