EMR and Infusion Pump Interoperability at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of MinnesotaDecember 20, 2013

The Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, has initiated infusion pump and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) interoperability using smart pump technology. The smart pump and EMR integration was developed by California-based medical device manufacturer CareFusion. Bobbie Carrol, R.N., senior director of patient safety and informatics at Children’s Hospitals says that the technological integration will allow medical professionals to abide by the six rights of medication administration.
"What we've developed is the ability to wirelessly transmit clinical information from the electronic medical record to auto-pump programming, where we've pre-programmed the pump with specific data. Then the nurse basically validates the information then starts the infusion. (Information on the volume of the) fluid that's infusing to the patient will wirelessly flow back to the EMR for documentation,” said Carol. The new system allows barcode scanning in this integration process.
According to “The Principles of Medication Administration”, Nurses are expected to follow six rights of medication administration: right patient, right medication, right dose, right route, right time, and right documentation. Using this technology will give healthcare providers the ability to give proper and better care for patients. This is in line with Children’s Hospitals’ ideals, which state that “technology should be leveraged for patient safety.”
To get an estimate of the number of practitioners using this technology, Children’s Hospitals tracked contributing factors including medication percentage put into Guard Rails, the safety software that limits dosages, plus tracking of medication scanning compliance rates. Carroll says that both measures show increased use of the innovative system integration across the board.
Improvement of patient care and safety depends highly on the medical community’s commitment to use only well-serviced infusion pump systems.
