Cross Device Integration for Infusion PumpsSeptember 05, 2011

This week, Healthcare Purchasing News has reported on the status of device integration in the medical industry specifically with patient monitors and infusion pumps.
Shaw St. Pierre, the global category manager for monitoring of Welch Allyn, has reported that there will be a significant improvement with patient results once there is collaboration between the two devices. The reason for this growth is due to the increasing adoption of electronic medical record systems (ERM)
According to Marc Probst, Intermountain Healthcare’s chief information officer, with this integration, healthcare providers will be able to see the order information that the doctor has requested directly on the infusion pump’s display monitor. This would help ensure that the patient is receiving correct infusion and also serves as an added safety measure. Data can be sent from the EMR system directly to the pumps, which would add to the improvement in accuracy and efficiency of clinical outcomes. Eric Sato, the marketing director for Baxter infusion pumps in the US stated that there are only a handful of EMR integrated infusion pumps such as their own SIGMA Spectrum Infusion System in the market today.
