The RFID (radio-frequency identification) in Healthcare Consortium (RHCC) and recently honored the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota with this year’s Intelligent Hospital Award for “Improving the Patient Experience: Care and Safety.” The accolade recognizes the hospital’s contribution in the success of the infusion pump interoperability solution they pioneered in partnership with Kansas-based health care technology developer Cerner and California-based medical device manufacturer CareFusion.

Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota Wins Award for Improving Patient ExperienceDesigned to help prevent intravenous (IV) medication programming inaccuracies, the system works by connecting Alaris System smart infusion pumps with the Cerner Millennium electronic health record (EHR) through the CareAware Infusion Suite. Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota is a pioneer pediatric hospital system in infusion pump and EHR interoperability for both syringe pumps and large volume infusions.

Bobbie Carroll, R.N., the hospital’s patient safety and informatics senior director, remarked, “We are so honored to receive an Intelligent Hospital Award for Improving the Patient Experience, but it is even more rewarding to know that this technology is improving patient safety in our hospitals every day.”

Carroll noted that since implementing the new system, a reported 57 percent increase in smart pump drug safety parameters utilization has been achieved along with a 37 percent decline in safety learning reports amongst drug administration incidents.

The medical breakthrough allows for accurate and seamless IV administration as the Alaris System can be wirelessly and automatically pre-populated with precise infusion orders directly from the Cerner EHR, thereby improving clinical outcomes, staff efficiency, financial performance, and more importantly, overall better patient care.

The advancement of patient care and drug safety highly depends on the medical community’s commitment to employ only high quality, medical grade infusion pump systems.
