KLAS Research has cited CareFusion as the company best poised to take the lead in integrating smart pumps with electronic medical records (EMR). In their 2013 Smart Pump/EMR Integration Report, CareFusion was shown to be the only company that currently has customers using EMR interoperability with large volume and syringe infusion pumps. Additionally the Alaris System infusion pumps were given the highest overall score in the syringe pump and patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump categories.

CareFusion deemed leaderThe report showed 9 out of 18 hospitals will have chosen CareFusion’s interoperability solution for their EMR integrations by the end of 2014 – which is more than twice as many contracts as any other infusion pump vendor. Additionally, this marks the second year in a row that the company has received the highest overall score in the syringe and PCA pump categories. The report also indicated the Alaris Pump module has moved up to take the second place spot in the Large Volume Pump category.

CareFusion’s interoperability solution features wireless pre-population support of infusion parameters into its large volume and syringe pumps and sending of near real-time infusion status back to the EMR for documentation.

To date, the company has implemented its EMR interoperability solution at both Oklahoma Heart Hospital and Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

”In order to enhance patient safety and improve clinician workflow, hospitals must effectively integrate health information technology and medical devices into their best practices,” said Bobbie Carroll, senior director of patient safety and informatics at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

Ensuring proper maintenance and servicing of infusion pump systems also adds to the safety and quality of patient care.
