Earlier this week, health care technology providers Carefusion and Cerner, announced a joint project to integrate smart infusion technology in the Oklahoma Heart Hospital. With the aim to improve medication safety, quality patient care and efficient workflow, the integrated solution allows nurses to remotely administer medication programs from the Cerner Millenium electronic health record (EHR) system to the Carefusion Alaris Infusion Pump System. This process is done by barcode scanning.

This new solution utilizing the Carefusion Alaris System and Cerner Careware iBus eliminates the need for manual operation that requires at least 16 key presses. This integration reduces the risk of medication programming error when using an IV pump system manually. “We now have four validations of the infusion order – the physician, the pharmacist, the nurse and the ability to auto-program the infusion pump – and have removed the potential errors one can make when manually programming an infusion pump.”, Michelle Mullins, director of Clinical Systems for Oklahoma Heart Hospital, announced. Also, the new technology enables clinicians and healthcare personnel to document the patient’s record in near real-time.

The two healthcare providers aim to continually develop solutions for further enhancement of infusion safety and improved clinician workflow.
