Baxter/Baxa Holds Symposium on Safe Pharmacy Advances at ASHP

December 05, 2011

Earlier this week, the Annual American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) held their 46th midyear clinical meeting & exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana. Baxter/Baxa hosted two symposiums in the event, focusing on prevention and safety with medication preparation and administration.

During the first day, Dennis Tribble, FASHP (Fellow of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists), chief pharmacy officer for Baxa Corporation had a discussion with Chris Jerry, president and CEO of the Emily Jerry Foundation. The Emily Jerry Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims for safe medication by minimizing “human error” through public awareness on the latest medical technology. Jerry shared his thoughts on his daughter Emily’s tragic ordeal, wherein a wrong dose of saline solution caused her death. Jerry also talked about preventive methods that the medical society can implement, to avoid similar future incidents.

The next day, the second seminar provided key knowledge on using the latest technology in preventing errors with IV medications and was entitled “Using Bar Code and Digital Imaging Technology to Reduce IV Compounding Errors”. The symposium, led by Michael R. Cohen, Rph, MS, ScD, FASHP, president of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, focused on error identification, staff training recommendation, implementation of IV admixture/workflow software and process adaptation difficulties that may be encountered in the future.

With a growing effort to provide error-free drug delivery to patients, healthcare institutions in the US need up-to-date infusion medication devices. AIV offers replacement parts and repair services for most leading infusion pump systems. Check the available infusion pump products at http://www.aiv-inc.com/iv-infusion-pump-replacement-parts.html.
