Alaris Infusion Pump System Now FIPS 140-2 AccreditedJanuary 02, 2012

CareFusion, a medical device manufacturer, announced earlier this week that they have received the FIPS 140-2 compliance for their Alaris Infusion System. Now, the infusion pump system can be operated in any Veterans Affair hospital in the US.
FIPS 140-2 (Federal Information Processing Standard) is a certification issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to private sector vendors allowing their products to be used in US government facilities. The NIST requires private manufacturers and/or vendors to comply with the FIPS security accreditation program ensuring that any sensitive but unclassified information will be protected.
CareFusion’s Alaris infusion pump met the requirements to provide a secure wireless network between the hospital and the Alaris Systems manager. JC Kyrillos, senior vice president and general manager of Infusion Systems for CareFusion, said that their company is now ready to extend their services to other Federal care providers after receiving the certification by protecting patient safety and maintaining confidentiality.
The Alaris Infusion Pump System is the first IV medication delivery system to have received the data encryption certification from NIST. To ensure that no security issue is compromised, it is important that all parts of the infusion system are working properly.
