Hancock Regional Hospital is piloting a wireless fetal monitoring patch that provides comfort to women in labor while allowing doctors to monitor babies more easily during labor.

Wireless Monitoring Gives Laboring Women More Options

Hancock Regional Hospital, a pilot facility for GE medical products, now offers the Monica Novii, a wireless fetal monitoring patch system to provide more comfort to women in labor. The Andis Women’s and Children’s Department underwent an $800,000 renovation in order to make the women’s center more appealing to expecting families.

The patch monitors the baby’s and mother’s heartbeat as well as the progression of contractions. It replaces the belt-like monitors that wrap around the abdomen and limit movement and allows laboring women a more comfortable alternative giving them the option to move around the unit to find relief from contractions. The Novii monitor is an effective monitoring solution for women with a high BMI.

The new device is anticipated to make nurses’ jobs easier because the monitors are easier to handle and there is less clutter from wires in the delivery room. The patch uses Bluetooth technology to transmit data to nurses’ tablets up to 65 feet allowing women the freedom to move around the unit.

The patch will give women the ability to use an exercise ball or a warm shower as less traditional methods of pain management. The option to change position will give the women more comfort and might help labor as well.
