Smart Clothes to Allow Vital Sign Tracking in Style

February 24, 2015

Blake Uretsky, Cornell University student in Ithaca, New York, has designed a smart maternity clothing line that enables expectant mothers to track their vital signs during pregnancy. The health tracking line, called B Maternity Wearables, has earned Uretsky a $30,000 scholarship from the YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund to develop her clothing label further.

"Wearable technology products must both be aesthetically pleasing and have meaning and value to users, and pregnancy is a time where critical monitoring is necessary," says Uretsky.

The ten piece collection consists of blouses, trousers, skirts, and an evening gown that all come in neutral colors and adjusts to a growing bump. Similar to smart sports clothing, each piece contains conductive silver fibers woven into the fabric. These silver wiresare threaded through the entire waistline. Through the wires, vital signs such as temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration are collected and sent via Bluetooth to a companion smartphone app. Once the data is collected, wearers can then send the information to their doctors for analysis.

According to Julia Walsh, a maternal health expert at the University of California at Berkley, women with high-risk pregnancies or those who enjoy tracking devices such as Fitbit, can gain a lot from this kind of technology.

Owen Montgomery, an obstetrician at Drexel University in Philadelphia, has also voiced her support for the concept. “If you could put on your maternity garment, and then have your blood pressure sent electronically to your doctor's office every morning, that's really sweet." she comments.

The B Maternity Wearables fashion line is just one example of the many advanced options becoming available for patients and clinicians today.
