NHCL Opens New Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic

April 07, 2015

The Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune (NHCL) officially opened its new Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Clinic on March 26, 2015.

The new facility boasts of having five state-of-the-art ultrasound rooms. Each room is equipped with an independent wall-mounted viewing monitor and an external fetal monitoring system. With the new monitors, patients can now comfortably view a live feed of their ultrasound during the procedure. Meanwhile, the fetal monitoring system provides a non-invasive method for evaluating maternal vital signs and other medical information from the patient for analysis by the MFM staff.

NHCL has also teamed up with Womack Army Medical Center to provide fetal echodiograms to identify birth defects of the heart. Additional services include counselling for mothers with medical problems and pre-conceptual counselling for women with a history of miscarriages or clotting disorders. Through the counselling sessions, the staff at the MFM can develop management plans with their patients to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

“The Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic is a new service to the Camp Lejeune area to provide support and service to women with high risk pregnancies," said Cmdr. Linda C. Chan, Head of the Maternal Fetal Medicine Department. "We are in direct support of the hospital’s Level II Special Care Nursery, offering prenatal diagnosis of birth defects in developing babies."

“The MFM Clinic is designed with the patient in mind, and gives NHCL the ability to take care of patients with high risk pregnancies. This ability, along with the capabilities of our Level II Special Care Nursery, ensure that we can treat all aspects of a pregnancy and keep families together by also caring for infants that are born as early as 32 weeks.” She adds.

The new MFM Clinic at NCHL provides expectant mothers with better access to safe and comfortable maternal and fetal care.
