Global Industry Analysts, Inc. has released a study that attributes the growth in the global fetal monitors market to developing countries. According to the results, there are four driving factors that are growing demand: more frequent occurrences of cardio pulmonary diseases, increasing multiple and preterm births from successful in-vitro fertilization treatments, more comprehensive, case-managed perinatal services, and the development of wireless handheld fetal monitors that enable remote real-time data monitoring.

Significant advances in monitoring technology were also cited to drive growth in demand. Examples mentioned in the study include on-going development of fetal monitors with accurate hypoxic condition indication features, mobile solutions for real-time monitoring applications, non-voltage technologies based on radiofrequency, fetal magnetocardiography, and fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). An additional area of interest mentioned was the development of precise uterine contraction monitors that eliminated ambient noise and was built on electromyography (EMG) of the uterine muscle.

The United States was reported to be the single largest market worldwide. However, Asia-Pacific was predicted to exhibit the fasted CAGR of about 5.6% over the analysis period, followed closely by Latin America. The increase of demand in these regions was attributed to the improved obstetrics and gynecology standards, as well as the growing levels of health awareness. Additionally, high birth rates and a large population base in most developing countries are paving the way to opportunities for fetal monitor manufacturers.

As increasing demand for fetal monitors drive advances in maternal and fetal monitoring technologies, physicians are presented with more ways to give their patients proper and efficient care. Together with these new tools, clinics and hospitals need top-notch fetal monitoring systems to ensure proper maternal care and fetal safety.
