The Fogarty Institute for Innovation recently announced it hasselected five medical start-up companies to join their incubation program, including California-based First Pulse Medical. First Pulse Medical developed a “non-invasive intrauterine monitor” that uses light-based technology to capture fetal heart rate (FHR) and other vital signs.

First Pulse Medical’s sensor yields various parameters including FHR, fetal oxygenation and EKG-like fetal heart waveform. These vitals will provide clinicians sufficient data to assess the well-being of the baby inside the womb. The company hopes “to bring non-traumatic, ICU-type diagnostic capabilities into the labor and delivery room”.

Along with other four selected companies, First Pulse Medical will closely collaborate with physicians, engineers and business professionals to expedite the delivery of new innovative medical therapies and products for improved patient care. El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, CA will house the research and development area for the newly-enrolled companies.

The Fogarty Institute for Innovation is a non-profit organization that assists the next generation of medical innovators for improved patient care. The chosen companies, which focus on women’s health and maternity health issues, will join the four other companies currently in the program.
