Students at the Florida National University (FNU) are offering free ultrasounds to women who are 32 weeks into their pregnancy to monitor their babies’ health. Conducted at FNU’s Hialeah and South Campuses, the ultrasound testing will be guided and supervised by instructors who are registered diagnostic medical sonographers.

The students who are performing the ultrasound tests were trained on B-Mode, M-Mode, Color Doppler, Spectral Doppler, 3D and 4D modalities. FNU’s project, called Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Technology (DMST) Associates of Science program, aims “to prepare students perform ultrasound procedures”.

Appointments are available from Monday to Thursday from 1pm to 5pm and on Fridays from 1 pm to 9pm. Women who are interested in receiving an ultrasound can schedule an appointment with the university during these hours.

“The purpose of offering these free ultrasounds is two-fold. First, we believe in serving our community. Second, it provides our students with real-world experience and exposes them to numerous normal cases… [w]e have been offering this service for the last five years and have seen how it not only benefits mothers and students, but also how it tightens the bond between the university and our community,” said FNU’s Allied Health Division Head Loreto Almonte.

Proper training, properly-serviced ultrasound machines and other fetal monitoring systems should be used to ensure excellent fetal and maternal care.
