Drexel University Researchers to Initiate a Clinical Trial for the Smart Fabric Bellyband Technology

Drexel University prepares their smart fabric bellyband technology for an official clinical trial on 5 to 20 expectant mothers following successful simulation trials. The application testing protocol is tailored to optimize comfort, safety, and accuracy in monitoring the fetal heart rate and uterine contractions at a reasonable cost.

A brainchild of the Drexel's Shima Seiki Haute Technology Laboratory, this wearable fetal monitoring equipment is integrally designed with radio frequency identification (RFID) tag and electrically conductive thread, which transmits the signal to an RFID reader while the bellyband stretches during random uterine contractions.

Among the start-up innovators include Genevieve Dion, Director of Shima Seiki Haute Technology Lab and Professor of Fashion Design at Drexel University; Tim Kurzweg, Drexel Associate Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Dr. Owen Montgomery, chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at Drexel University College of Medicine.

At the recent Bio’s Life Science Future symposium held on October 14th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, several research institutions across the U.S. showcased each of their groundbreaking clinical advances and discoveries. As one of the participating institutions, Drexel University highlighted in their presentation, entitled “Smart Fabric Bellyband: Fetal Monitoring Reimagined,” the group’s innovative approach to providing easily wearable yet ultra-comfortable fetal heart monitoring technology that allows full flexibility without limiting the mobility of pregnant women.
