Aria Diagnostics Announces New Non-Invasive Prenatal Test Clinical Study

January 16, 2012

Aria Diagnostics, a non-government biotechnology facility, announced the launch of the NEXT (Non-Invasive Chromosomal Examination of Trisomy) study earlier this week. The study aims to provide early detection and discover an alternative for Trisomy 21 during pregnancy. Trisomy 21 is an extra chromosome that leads to Down syndrome. This abnormality affects human physical and intellectual development.

One of the coordinators of the study, Dr. Mary E. Norton, Director of Perinatal Research at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Stanford, reports that this clinical trial will “offer a more cost-effective and efficient option that is feasible for use in a wide population”. NEXT features T21 detection within the first trimester of pregnancy.

Researchers invited 25,000 pregnant women who were 18 years or older, carrying one fetus and planning a hospital delivery to join the study. Blood samples were collected from the participants who will also undergo a nuchal scan using an ultrasound. Unlike other clinical studies, the complete stages of pregnancy and the newborn’s medical records will be monitored. Researchers will then look into the newborn’s phenotype within their first 28 days of life. This procedure will be conducted using genetic testing and pre-defined statistical analysis.

With the increasing interest and studies involving fetal health issues, it is important to ensure that researchers and healthcare professionals use high-quality medical instruments to monitor both the mother and the baby’s health.
