Earlier this week, InMedica, a division of IMS Research in the UK, has released a research study entitled “The World Market for Infusion Pumps and Accessories”. Based on the study, the demand for intelligent infusion pumps, also known as Smart pumps, will be maintained due to the need of advanced technology in reducing “never events” for US hospitals.

The US “never events” list is comprised of highly unacceptable incidents including prescription, preparation, medication and administration mistakes that facilities try to avoid. A situation included in this list is a patient’s death due to wrong dosage. Kelly Barritt, a senior analyst at IMS Research pointed out that 35 percent of medication errors were linked to IV pumps in the UK. To combat this situation, medical and healthcare facilities have been using smart pumps for improved 99 percent accuracy in drug infusion.

With the continued advancement and improvement of drug infusion technology, Smart pumps are said to reduce, if not completely eliminate, this medical error. Automation and safety features found in Smart pumps allow both clinicians and patients to receive efficient dosage delivery while guaranteeing patient safety. According to the report, safety features drive the growth of Smart pumps, with the US large-volume infusion pump market expected to increase by $500 million in 2015.

Proper maintenance of smart infusion pumps is crucial in achieving safe patient care, thus reducing “never events”. For replacement parts and repair services of infusion pumps, AIV supports most leading IV pumps in the market. Check out AIV’s full line of pump parts and services at
