Biomedical Instrumentation and Technology (BI&T), a journal published by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), revisited the issue of infusion pump safety in a recent article. The discussion of pump safety began two years ago at a joint summit held between AAMI and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that focused on the safety of infusion devices.

Tony Easty, a senior scientist at the University Health Network in Toronto said that he noticed more of a “systems approach” has been taken with regards to infusion safety. “Manufacturers are more aware of the difficulties that occur in implementation and clinical use, and healthcare organizations and clinical engineers are looking at infusion safety in a more comprehensive way than before,” he added.

In the article, The FDA described improved progress in incident reporting and approval of infusion devices. BI&T listed a 10-step guide for hospitals and healthcare facilities to follow for improved infusion safety.

The featured story discussed current research studies on infusion pump safety, including a Johns Hopkins University project on device design and usability. The article also cited AAMI’s Foundation Healthcare Technology Safety Institute (HTSI) efforts in leading research studies regarding the subject.
