Polish Doctors Develop New Portable Fetal Heart MonitorJuly 28, 2016
Known as the Pregnabit, the handheld fetal monitor measures fetal heart rate, muscle contractions of the uterus, fetal movement and includes a pulse oximeter. The device itself is the same size as a smartphone and can fit inside a small case along with its sensors.
According to the inventors, their fetal heart rate monitor offers the same capabilities as regular CTG devices operated in hospitals. It measures each parameter with the same accuracy and uses the same types of doppler probes. An extra probe in the system also helps to avoid any confusion between heartbeat readings of the mother and child.
After each examination, the data is transmitted to a monitoring center where it is analyzed within 15 minutes by the medical staff who then advise the patient based on the results.
In case of abnormalities, patients are guided through the necessary steps to take before arriving at a clinic.
Plans for developing a web interface are underway so patients can browse through their examination history and diagnoses.
