Experts Focus on Reducing Computer Viruses in Health Networks
Computer viruses and other malware pose real threats to hospital networks and medical devices. Engineering researchers from the University of Michigan who are part of the national team will be working to improve cyber security within the country’s health systems.
Associate Professor Kevin Fu and Research Associate Professor Michael Bailey, both working in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Michigan, are part of the five-year Trustworthy Health and Wellness project with a $10 million funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The researchers will create methods in the scientific study of the extent of malware in hospital networks. “Malicious software or malware can interrupt the function of medical devices, affecting the quality of patient care. By increasing the quality of the science, we seek to create more meaningful discussions about risks and benefits of adapting hospital networks to the threat of malware,” Said Fu.
Experts will be working on establishing better authentication and privacy tools, reliable and trustworthy control of medical devices and effective means to detect malware, and address all relevant issues to create more efficient, trustworthy and reliable health systems for patients.
The team includes experts with backgrounds in business, behavioral health, healthcare information technology, health policy and computer science. Along with the experts from University of Michigan, researchers from Dartmouth, The University of Illinois and John Hopkins University will also be participating.
